2014 AFL Micro-Figures out now!

This week saw the unexpected release of the new AFL Micro-figures by TPF in conjunction with Coles and Coles Express Supermarkets.

For card collectors, the artwork may look somewhat familiar, with Melbourne-based artist, Paul Harvey, whose caricatures are also featured on the 2014 AFL Select Champions Firepower Caricatures. The Brownlow Medal insert figures will sure to be hot which include Chris Judd, Adam Goodes, Dane Swan, Gary Ablett and Jobe Watson, along with 30 regular player figures, including Eddie Betts in an Adelaide Crows uniform, and Melbourne's Nathan Jones sporting a superb tattooed arm-sleeve.

A press release also conveyed the news -

Coles has partnered with the AFL and TPF to develop the new Official AFL Micro-Figures. Bringing Australia’s favourite footy heroes from the stadium to the supermarket aisles, the AFL Micro-Figures launch on the 5th March exclusively to Coles, Coles Online (NSW & QLD) and Coles Express.

Standing 4.5cm in height and selected from all 18 AFL clubs, there are 30 football superstars up for grabs, each unique AFL Micro-Figure captures the distinct characteristics of some of greatest players of our time, from the tattooed-sleeve of Dane Swan, to the perfectly positioned hair of Trent Cotchin and Nic Naitanui’s dreadlocks.

Collectors are also in with a chance to open the packet and find one of five rare and suited-up Brownlow Medal winning figures, including Chris Judd, Dane Swan, Gary Ablett, Jobe Watson, and current Australian of the Year, Adam Goodes.

Simon McDowell, Coles Marketing and Store Development Director, says, ‘We love footy at Coles. We are proud sponsors of the League and committed to supporting the community and skills development partnerships of the Coles AFL Schools and Coles AFL Indigenous programs*.”

“To kick off the AFL season and celebrate this great game, we are delighted to offer our customers their footy heroes in the nation’s first AFL Micro-Figure collection.”

AFL General Manager - Commercial Operations, Darren Birch, said: "The AFL is pleased to work alongside Coles and TPF on this project. This offers football fans a unique opportunity to show their support for their favourite player or club.”

"It's also yet another example of the strong relationship we enjoy with Coles as we look to continue to grow what continues to be a successful partnership."

Giles Musker, General Manager of Retail at TPF, says, “As the creators of the AFL Micro-Figures, we are over the moon with how well they have been received by kids, parents, and even the players themselves! We spent over 12 months developing the Micro-Figures and worked hard to ensure the player likeness was spot on.

We are proud to give kids the chance to collect and play with their very own footy heroes - The look on the kid’s faces when they open the packs and find their favorite player is simply priceless!” said Giles Musker.

In addition to the AFL Micro-Figures, Footy fans will also be able to create their own micro football field, by collecting 42 oval puzzle pieces.

The Official AFL Micro-Figures are available for $2 each from Coles, Coles Online (NSW & QLD)  and Coles Express, as of Monday 3 March 2014. Each foil bag includes one AFL Micro-Figure, two footy field puzzle pieces, and a collector’s leaflet.

Tri-Star trouble for Select??

With Select set to release the Tri-Star Signature next week, trouble may be brewing for the card company as copyright allegations surface. Several keen-eyed collectors have pointed out that Tri-Star is an established US based company that not only operates the National Sports Collectors Convention but already produces trading cards called “Tri-Star Signatures”.
What action (if any) Tri-Star intends to take remains unknown, but it makes for interesting times ahead in the card collecting arena.

The OzCardtrader forum has been commenting on this recently, for more info -

New horizons on the 2010 Draft Day Rookie Cards & 2012 Football Draft Prospects cards

We released the Draft Day Rookie cards in December 2010. Collectors demanded more, so in Feb 2012, we proudly released the 2012 Football Draft Prospects to the football-hungry collectors of our nation.

Both sets provided collectors with the earliest rookie cards of potential stars that their respective clubs had drafted and featured them in neutral Guernsey colors. Some 18 months later after the sealed boxes and cases sold out at wholesale/retail levels, the product continues to generate many inquiries every week here at FC HQ on the phone and via email.

Furthermore, the product is always moving on the secondary market due to the wide and varied player selection, but more importantly the 2nd year of free-agency within the AFL, giving the opportunity for players in this set to move to different teams.

From a collector-standpoint this opens up a world of new opportunities for collectors too!

2010 Draft Day Rookie Cards

An update on the all the players in the set -

David Swallow - 2010 #1 Pick, key contributor in Gold Coast midfield
Andrew Gaff - a important player in Eagles' rebuild
Reece Conca - always improving, looking like a brilliant pick by the Tigers
Brandon Matera - showed plenty of glimpses of stardom when healthy
Blayne Wilson - made his AFL senior debut in 2013 for West Coast Eagles
Sam Menagola - yet to make senior debut at Hawthorn or Fremantle
Justin Monaco - undrafted
Ben Jacobs - left Port Adelaide, and redrafted by Kangaroos in 2012 National Draft
Jack Darling - one of the best up-and-coming power forwards in the league, his rookie card sold-out before he even played a game, a tough-find now.
Ryan Lester - a key component of the Lions' future
Ben Newton - yet to make senior debut at Port Adelaide Power
Aaron Young - made his AFL senior debut in 2013 for Port Power, had huge impact in Power's finals aspirations this season.
Viv Michie - debuted for Fremantle in 2013, and won Peel Thunder (WAFL) BF, recently traded to Melbourne Demons.
Mitch Hallahan - yet to make senior debut at Hawthorn, especially in a contending team, however won the VFL's Liston Medal in 2013 and played in VFL Grand Final. Looking to crack the senior team in 2014.

2012 Football Draft Prospects Triple Signature Card
2012 Football Draft Prospects

A few updates on some of the players in the set -

Billy Longer - Ruckman with huge potential, recently traded from Brisbane to St Kilda
Brad Crouch - this set contains the ONLY rookie card of this Crows potential superstar. All his cards (Draft Signature, Nickname Signature, Futures and Future Star Guernsey) always demand attention when available on the secondary market.
Brad Hill - the first Premiership player from the set, and already one of the most popular in the set, rivaling Kavanagh, Ellis and Crouch with prices on all his cards at the upper end of the spectrum.
Brandon Ellis - despite playing for one of the most popular teams in the league, this Richmond youngster is playing the game with tremendous skill, and collectors love him! Most would consider Ellis to be the highest priced player in the set.
Chad Wingard - where do you start? All-Australian Team selection in his 2nd season, key finals contributor for his team in 2013. Everything points to a very successful career for years to come. Future captain in the making, perhaps? All his cards are in hot demand!
Elliot Yeo - cracked the Lions lineup in 2013 and never really looked back. Recently traded to his home state, where the West Coast Eagles welcomed him with open arms. One of the three Lions on the triple signature card with Longer and Docherty.
Jackson Paine - traded from Collingwood to Brisbane for Patrick Karnezis, allowing some excellent forward opportunities alongside veteran Johnathan Brown.
Jonathon Patton - injury riddled first 2 seasons sadly, but the upside is huge for the key forward prospect; 2011 #1 overall pick.
Lachie Neale - for a late pick, the Dockers have done well. Played a few senior games in his first season, and then in 2013 became a regular senior player, including the 2013 Grand Final. Enormous upside, when will collectors take notice?
Lauchlan Dalgleish - promoted from the rookie list, played senior games for Essendon in the back half of season 2013. All positive signs so far for the Bombers.
Sam Docherty - traded from Brisbane to Carlton which must excite some collectors, was also featured on the triple signature card, some of which will now be sought-after by Blues' fans!
Shane Kersten - key forward for the Cats, and will more than likely debut at AFL level in 2014. Keep an eye out for his Power Pick card, which might receive some renewed attention.  Geelong signaled a change, one of which was trading forward Paul Chapman to Essendon.
Stephen Coniglio - Played 18 games in 2013, averaging a shade under 20 disposals per game. Will be a key figure his team's midfield.
Toby Greene - Averaged over 22 possessions a game in 2013, will team nicely with Coniglio in the future. Unlucky not to win the NAB Rising Star in his debut year.

2012 Football Draft Prospects Preview 5-card Set - Elliott Kavanagh, Corey Gault, Hayden Crozier, Jonathon Patton and Chad Wingard.
